Design Philosophy
1. The Pomodoro Technique
Human concentration is not limitless. Our bodies follow a cycle of alertness known as the ultradian rhythm, which lasts roughly 90 minutes. However, for high-intensity cognitive tasks in the modern age, shorter cycles are often more effective for maintaining peak performance. The Pomodoro Technique—alternating between 25 minutes of focus and 5 minutes of rest—is based on this principle. While we have set the default focus time to 25 minutes, please feel free to adjust it to suit your personal concentration rhythm.
2. The 5-Second Rule
Waiting for the "motivation" to strike is often futile. In a passive state, the amygdala—the brain's center for fear and hesitation—will actively act as a brake, making action increasingly difficult. The 5-Second Rule, rooted in neuroscientific insight, suggests that when you decide to act, you should count down "5-4-3-2-1" and move within five seconds. This forces a shift in dominance from the emotional centers to the prefrontal cortex, which governs logic and execution. This app is designed for immediate startup so you can jump straight into your work—before your brain has a chance to come up with excuses.
3. The Enemy of Immersion
For those with traits associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or ADHD, even minor background noise or excessive visual input can quickly deplete cognitive resources. This exhaustion of mental resources impairs executive functions, such as task switching and time management. The minimalist design of this app and the deliberate choice to round up the seconds displayed are intended to minimize visual overload and conserve working memory, helping you create an environment optimized for focus.
4. 「Human-in-the-loop」
This app was created using Gemini by a Gen-Z university student inspired by a blog post about ChatGPT. A simple timer was completed in just a few prompts. However, refining the design and UX to fit my personal needs required dozens of back-and-forth interactions with AI. This process is known as a "Human-in-the-Loop" approach, where a human remains involved in key decisions and strategies rather than leaving everything to the AI. Though it was sometimes frustrating when my intentions weren't perfectly understood, the experience of watching AI generate code in an instant was truly remarkable. I encourage you to partner with AI to build your own original tools!
